ABOUT ME
Karl Shikles, owner of Shikles Cabinets
A Kansas City native, I have had a career that has included most aspects of residential construction. This allows me to offer advice and expertise on all aspects of your project and to coordinate with general contractors and other sub contractors to ensure that your entire project runs quickly and smoothly. I have been focused solely on cabinetry for about a dozen years now and feel that my expertise in it is unsurpassed. I prefer to work alone but can bring in other industry professionals as needed to help with specialized projects or to handle larger pieces. One of the main benefits of this is that you know exactly whom you are dealing with and won't be surprised by strangers in your home.
MY PROCESS
As a sole proprietor, I hand craft all components of my cabinets and furniture from scratch. This includes designing the space from scratch with the homeowner or adapting an idea into a specific model and set of plans in collaboration with another professional. Once the design is finalized and the deposit received, I begin the fabrication process. Almost all of my projects are spray finished by me in a controlled space before I install them on site. I personally handle every procedure from cutting the plywood to dovetailing the drawer boxes. Not only does this eliminate the errors that arise from miscommunication within a shop, but it tends to make the process quicker since there are no conflicting schedules between specialties.
MY PRICING
Unless this is your first stop in your search for custom cabinets, you are probably already aware that cabinets are not cheap. My work is no exception. However, because of my low overhead, I am able to combine top quality materials with craftsmanship that meets or exceeds my most high-end competitors at a much lower price. In fact, my finished and installed projects are often the same price or even cheaper than the semi-custom brands that are offered by retailers and picked up from the store - no installation included. Additionally, I never include hidden costs in a project. If there are any changes that are so drastic that a price change is required, then this will be discussed before the changes are agreed to and made. Sadly, many shops do not share this ethical consideration with me and often plan on including hidden fees that are sprung on their clients at the end of the project.
